Boss Leap Unplugged: Rapid Fire Questions With The Co-Hosts

Welcome back to Boss Leap. My name is Dr. Sylvia Morris. I’m here with my lovely co-host, Dr. Angela Walker. We are in for a treat. You get to hear all about us. It’s time to flip the script. You always hear us talking with our wonderful guests and having conversations. Now, you get to hear what makes us tick. We’re going to call this Rapid Fire Round. There’ll be short questions, quick answers, and no overthinking, which I know we are prone to do. Are you ready, Angela? How are you doing?

I’m ready. I brought the fun. I was happy to engage with this idea. Hopefully, we can make this a little sprinkling in our episodes if everyone likes it.

Please let us know if you like this. Send us a message at BossLeapPodcast@gmail.com. Without further ado, we are going to dive right into the question. Are you ready, Angela?

I’m ready. Are you going first?

Coffee Or Tea

I’m going first. These are quick, easy, no pressure, gut reaction, coffee or tea?

Coffee. I wish it was tea because I like the idea of getting a different tea every morning and putting your cup in. I like the picturesque little teacup with the tea bag hanging over, but it’s got to be coffee first thing in the morning. That’s my jam.

I’m a tea person in the morning, and then coffee a little bit later. Espresso a little bit later. Seattle, I can’t shake it.

Morning Bird Or Night Owl

Morning bird or night owl?

I am a morning person by occupation. I have now found that I need to go to bed earlier because I do better the next day. I can get up at the right time and get my day going. I am more of a midday kind of girl. Can I change the question?

That was exactly my answer. I was neither. I am middle of the day, 10:00 to 2:00, peak out. Those are perfect. Those are my most productive hours. I completely agree with you.

Planned Getaway Or A Spontaneous Trip

That’s why we are great friends and co-hosts. Planned getaway or spontaneous for the moment trip?

Planned getaway. It has to be planned, or it doesn’t happen.

I want to be one of those people who is like, “Pack your bag and meet me at the airport.” I’m like, “Where am I going? Do I need a passport? What shoes do I need?” I go into thinking overdrive because there’s nothing worse than getting somewhere and not having that one thing that would be perfect. In theory, somebody said that was fun, but that’s not fun unless you have a whole new closet where you’re going. There was a movie. She went to visit this gentleman. He had a whole closet full of clothing in her size.

That’s my kind of plan. I want to be the spur-of-the-moment person. I want to be a minimalist spur of the moment. I love Tracee Ellis Ross. She’s got all her bags packed in, and she can do that. If I’m going to be able to do a spur-of-the-moment, I’ve got to have a swimsuit, jeans, shorts, Birks, sneakers, sunglasses, and the toiletries. How about that? Passport.

You are a minimalist.

Text It Out Or Make The Call

Not really, but in my mind, to try to get ready for that spur-of-the-moment trip, that’s what I’m thinking, so I don’t know. Text it out or make the call?

I like a voice note now. I’ve gotten into those for people that I care about and I’m close to. I will send you a voice note because you can hear my voice and the inflection. My text game is not that great because I’m way too blunt and direct, and you lose the context. I come across sounding harsh or overly flowery and written. My instinct is always to pick up the phone and call people. I realized that just because I’m ready to talk doesn’t mean that you’re ready to talk. You?

I’m getting into the audio, the voice texts. If it’s too long, which I have a tendency to talk too long, then is it worth their while, or should I have picked up the phone and called them? I have to minimize the amount of speaking that I’m doing with the voice texts. Sometimes, the voice text has taken some of the question marks out when you’re texting somebody. What did they mean by that? What do you mean? You have to follow up on the text. There is always value in speaking. I’m still old school. I like to pick up the phone and call, but I do know everybody is busy. Sometimes, the voice text is the best. The only thing is, I don’t remember if I sent it to you. If I don’t save it, it goes away, so then I’m sending you three voice texts.

Voice texts take away some of the question marks around the intent of your messages. Share on X

I wonder whether it is being saved in the cloud and someone is going to use my voice to do X, Y, or Z? I don’t know.

Don’t even go there. Back to texting. We can’t go there.

Netflix Binge Or A Good Book

That’s funny. I never saved the voice text with people. I was like, “We’ll let them disappear.” Netflix binge or a good book?

What happens, or what I would love to happen, is probably the good book. I love a good book and sitting in a favorite chair by the window, by nature. That is the most relaxing thing. What happens more often is a Netflix binge. That’s more because it’s the easiest thing to do, especially at home. With my husband after work, it’s easier to do that together. In terms of my first love, it is a good book. How about you?

Have you binged on anything recently that’s binge-worthy?

Forever. We talked about that in one of our episodes. I loved everything about that one.

Mara Brock Akil. I think of it as a love letter to Inglewood or to Los Angeles in general.

There was another one. I cannot think of the name of it. It’s the most realistic medical series that I’ve seen. They’re in the ER. It’s realistic in terms of the way that they describe what’s happening. It’s fast-paced. It’s another confirmation that I don’t want to be in the ER.

Absolutely not. I can’t even watch it without getting anxious.

It does confirm why I respect ER doctors so much. The number of things that happen in one shift is not realistic, but it’s the way that they treat patients. This is not going to make any sense because I can’t think of the name of the show.

I can see it. I think Noah Wyle is in it. Is it not that one?

Yes.

He was in the original ER, but now he’s doing this one. It’s getting rave reviews. I do not know the name of it.

Maybe by the end, my old brain will think of it. I didn’t even realize that was him. I kept thinking, “He looks familiar.” It was a well-done show. How about you? What’s your recent binge or book?

The Diplomat is coming back.

New season?

The third season is coming out, so I’m super excited about The Diplomat. I watched the last episode of the Sex in the City reboot.

I haven’t seen all of it.

And Just Like That. That’s what it is. They ended it.

I saw the first episode, and I was like, “He died.”

That’s no spoiler.

Spoiler alert, sorry. You don’t know who.

Anytime you wrap up a series, it’s hard. They did put a big bow around everything. Who was Boris Kodjoe?

I can’t think of her last name. You already said Boris Kodjoe.

I know. That gets burned in your brain. Certainly, her character and that love story were beautiful. It’s hard to end the story And Just Like That. Just like that, let us move to this or that. We must pick one. I know I’m not good at following that rule, but we will see.

Being Over-Prepared Or Winging It

I’ll start. Overprepared or wing it?

I’m going to overprepare. If you’re not prepared for success, you’re prepared to fail. You can only wing it after you have prepared and overprepared. You can wing it in the future after you’ve done all the work now, but you can’t go out there willy-nilly.

However, I’m speaking of me, we sometimes have a habit of preparing so much that someone else has already started what you’re going to start. There is a line that you cross when you are trying to be so prepared not to fail that you are delaying your start. I’ll leave it at that.

Be The Funniest Or The Smartest In The Room

I get that. We will come to that perfectionism in another conversation. At least I’m prepared. Funniest in the room or smartest in the room?

Neither. I’m more fun and silly than the funniest.

I might be silly, but you are fun.

Intelligent, what I would want to be, probably both. Intelligent, yes. I can admit when I’m not the person who has the most facts. It’s easy for me to admit when I don’t know the answer, but I know how to get it. That was an interesting question. How about you?

It’s funny because I’m neither. However, I aspire to be the most curious in the room. That gets rid of my anxiousness about big rooms and big people, big crowds. It’s hard for me to find my footing. Small dinner party, I’m your girl. I talk to everybody. I find out what’s happening with everyone. One of our guests, Dr. Rhonda Mattox, talked about curiosity. I’m endeavoring to be curious, but I like the smartest guy in the room.

Know How Or When You Die

We’ll keep searching. Know how you die or when you die? It’s a heavy one.

I use the expression, “We’re in the living business.” The converse of that is we’re all dying. Some of us are faster than others. Maybe ‘how?’ ‘When’ is limiting for me because then I would always be, “That’s the day.” ‘How,’ I’m like, “Maybe we can circumvent some things. Don’t let it be painful.” I don’t know about that one. What about you?

I thought the same thing. I don’t want to know when. I’m thinking the same thing. If I know how, I can then change the circumstances so that I can either make it better or prolong it because I do love the land of the living. I don’t necessarily wouldn’t want to know when. I do think that people who are faced with terminal illnesses tend to live very intentionally. There’s a gift in that, but I would choose the first.

People who face terminal illnesses tend to have a unique gift of living intentional lives. Share on X

We all need to live intentionally because no day is promised. That’s cliché, but it is true.

That’s why we’re having fun.

Always 10 Minutes Late Or 20 Minutes Early

We are. Always ten minutes late or twenty minutes early? I don’t know who they wrote this question for.

You already know my answer. Ideally, I would love for it to be twenty minutes early. One of my flaws is that I fall towards the ten minutes late. When it’s super important, no, but I fall towards the ten minutes late, unfortunately.

I’m sliding in right on time. I was driving to work. I had eight minutes to get my coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. I got through the line in six minutes. I was like, “Thank you.” I called my coworker at 8:00. I’m like, “I’m here. I’m in the parking lot.” I’m right on time. I’m like, “I see no utility and being super early. That’s anxious. You’re in the way.” Lateness is a pet peeve, but I spare anybody ten minutes.

Lose The Ability To Lie Or Believe Everything You Are Told

You give me grace, and I appreciate it. I’m trying to do better. I have done a lot better. That’s a personal flaw. Here’s a question for you. Lose the ability to lie or believe everything you’re told?

Lose the ability to lie. That’s authenticity. Believe everything you’re told, you don’t be a nitwit.

Last Thing You Googled

That’s easy. Why would you want to believe everything you’re told? I agree. How about some of the quick personal questions? We’re going to take a peek behind the curtain. Last thing you googled?

I’ve been using Perplexity. Certainly, we’ve been talking about topics for shows, but I’m looking for a top for a formal occasion that I’m going to. That’s probably the last thing I’ve googled.

I was trying to Google Michelle Buteau because I love her.

She’s so funny.

She’s hilarious. I was trying to get her Netflix series, Survival of the Thickest. I was googling that for our last answer, and then right before the show, I googled, “Why is my microphone not working when it has worked every time?” That was actually Chat that helped me out there.

We love Chat.

Usually, practical things.

Emoji You Use The Most

Emoji that you use the most.

The laughing one, the straight looking at you, tears out in your eyes. That one.

Mine is a smiley face. I use hearts quite a bit, like a red heart.

I use a smiley face, too.

It’s a smiley face. The laughter is like a skew turned on its side. Is that one hysterical? I never understood the difference.

He’s busted his gut.

LMFAO.

You’ve got to be funny for me to put that one on.

No, I’ll stop. I’ll have to use that one more judiciously. Thank you.

Strangest Thing In Your Search History

Strangest thing in your search history.

I don’t know. I’m going to pass on that one.

You don’t know? I don’t know that I have anything strange in mind. It would probably pertain to my dog.

Sebby.

What you can use for bulldog alopecia. That’s strange. No one else is going to be searching for that other than me.

Is there a song you secretly love, but hate to admit?

Probably Nelly’s Hot In Herre because if you listen to all the lyrics.

That’s a good song. It’s so catchy.

They get me up out of my seat. It’s on my workout playlist.

I like that.

How about you?

I’ve been listening to GloRilla. Once you start saying the words, you’re like, “She said that,” and to each their own. It’s fine, but it’s like, “That may have been a lot for me.” There are some ABBA. You put on some ABBA. I love Dancing Queen and all of that stuff.

I’m Yacht Rock all the way. That’s my cleaning station. I put that on. It takes you back to the ’80s.

Some Doobie Brothers.

Michael McDonald.

One Food You Could Eat Every Single Day

One food you could eat every single day.

I’ll give a category, Mediterranean. Pretty much anything on that Mediterranean. I’d say salads, like Greek salad and olives. This is boring, but I would put the whole Mediterranean category. I like seafood, but I am doing more plant-based. Mediterranean, I’ll leave it at that. How about you?

French fries and ice cream. I’m like a twelve-year-old girl.

McDonald’s French fries, though.

Yes. If you gave me some truffle fries or if you’re in Paris at Pommes Frites and those things, I could. I cannot eat fries and ice cream every day. If there were no consequences to my health, I might consider it in moderation.

I definitely could do the fries every day.

Most Favorite Superhero

Let’s move to imagination. Let’s see how our brain works when things get a little wild. Favorite superhero.

I am not that superhero person, but the first person that comes to mind is Wonder Woman because, as a kid, she was Wonder Woman.

Lynda Carter.

Yes. I loved her. Who was that we heard about?

Storm?

Yes, Storm. I have to look her up. I’m not as engaged or familiar with some of the newer Marvel characters.

Marvel, DC. I’m not sure which is which. I was talking to this guy once. He said to me his favorite superhero was Batman because Batman dealt with the things of this world. Batman was human.

He was good.

That was a good answer. We can throw in a little Black Panther.

Batman and Robin. I’ll be your Robin. How about the Halle Berry Catwoman?

Superpower You Would Like To Have For 24 Hours

Absolutely. Superpower that you’d like to have for 24 hours?

I did not think about this one. The ability to know what would make the people closest to me happy.

That’s powerful. I hadn’t thought about that. That’s good.

That I could execute. How about you?

I was like, “Can I just teleport?”

That includes you.

Mine sounds a little selfish. That’s a good one.

Celebrity You Follow On Instagram And Enjoy The Most

Which celebrity do you follow on Instagram and enjoy the most?

Halle Berry, speaking of Catwoman, posts her workout videos on occasion. It’s inspiring. There are no long videos, but you see her in her routine. Certainly, you see her with her partner, Van Hunt. It is the embodiment of Black love, which is always great to see. She’s in her 50s and seeing her be strong and use her body in ways helps to inspire me in my workout. I say to Deanna Companion, who was one of our earlier guests on Boss Leap, “Halle was doing this this week. Can we add this to our routine?”

That’s awesome. I didn’t know that. I do follow her. She does show up in my feed a lot. I love how she is showing up right now in her life, in menopause, and in her relationship, and being free and being herself. I love that. For me, several people show up. Tabitha Brown, I love everything about her. She always makes me laugh. If she’s being serious, she makes me pause and say, “Okay.” I like her, the light that she shines, and her positivity. I follow Michelle Buteau. She makes me laugh. It’s usually people who are uplifting. Michelle Obama, of course.

We would love to be on the podcast.

That would be so fun with her and her brother.

Michelle and Craig, we’d be happy to sit there with you.

She’s always so down to earth, but yes, we could have a whole show about her.

Would You Travel To Space

We know her already in our brains and our hearts. Given the opportunity, would you travel to space? Gayle King was out there.

I love Gayle, but I’m thinking no. I don’t have that. I was the last person on the LASIKs. I’m the last person to adopt something new. By the time I got up enough nerve to do LASIK surgery, they said, “The shape of your eye, you can’t do it.” I’m a late adopter for most things. Traveling to space would be one of those. Maybe when I’m 90, or actually probably 105. That’s my target. That keeps changing. As I have a new birthday, it’s now one of those.

They’re going to tell you you’re too old to travel to space.

By then, maybe there’ll be other things. At this moment, I would have to say no. How about you?

Hard pass. No, thank you. For me, there are so many places to go on Earth and so many things to do on Earth. Why do I need to go way out there and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars? Even if someone sponsors my trip, I would be like, “Can you donate that to some causes around the corner?” It is not for me at this moment, but I am open to changing my mind.

Best Part Of The Job In Three Words

Since we’re on the mic, let’s bring it back to the industry for a second. Fast takes only. Best part of your job in three words.

People, people, and service.

I would say education, empowerment, and joy.

On the other hand, most cringeworthy jargon in medicine.

I can’t say what I want to say.

We’re going to keep it PG.

This is still PG. We’re grownups and adults, vajayjay. Can we name our parts? Can you come in here and tell me your part? What is bothering you? Why is that a bad word? My girls are like, “Okay.” I’m like, “It is an anatomical part that you should be able to name out loud.” I’m probably in the minority in terms of that one. How about you?

I hate the phrase workflow. “Let’s look at the workflow. Let’s tweak the workflow.” For me, that implies that it’s the bureaucracy.

You can do more.

I worry that we forget that there are human beings behind this workflow. I hate the phrase.

Workflow implies bureaucracy. It makes us forget the human beings behind our processes. Share on X

I’ll join you on that one.

Drs. Morris & Walker’s Dream Collaboration

Dream collaboration.

I would love to collab with Hoda Kotb. Now that she is doing more of health and wellness things, let’s do like a summit with her and bring in all the good things, health and wellness, mindfulness, yoga, and anything that you could dream of that would be empowering to women. I would be all about it. I like Hoda. Obviously, a collab on a destination type of a show.

Stay tuned, Boss Leap audience, for that. That is coming.

I’d say anything that would be empowering to women to help women who maybe feel stuck to find some direction and joy. I’m all about it. How about you?

Tamron Hall is top of mind, and her story.

She’s from Texas.

She’s a Dallas lady, if I remember correctly.

I don’t remember if it’s Dallas. For whatever reason, I didn’t think it was Dallas, but maybe you’re right.

I read the book from I’ve Had It. There’s a podcast called I’ve Had It. Their names are Jen and Boots. They are two ladies from Oklahoma City. They aren’t necessarily what you think about when you think of all of our stereotypes about Oklahoma City, but they are completely authentic. They share all parts of their life. They started out as podcasters, and now they have a book. They travel around the country, being authentic and sharing their stories. They are fantastic. We’re going to say hello to Jen and Boots from I’ve Had It.

That’s on my list. Shout out. That sounds wonderful. My type of podcast.

Skill You Wish  Had Instantly

A skill you wish you had instantly. If I could wave my magic wand, what skill would you want?

I’ve always wanted to do glass blowing. The more I look at it and see, with the large pieces, it looks like it may bother my carpal tunnel, but I’ve always wanted to. That’s one of the things I’d like to learn to do instantly. How about you?

It’s swimming. I have taken swim lessons as a child.

You had a fire post with your job in swimming and water safety. Sorry, I overtook your answer. It is not too late to learn to swim. I feel like that should be a requirement. Like you have to learn to read to get past whatever grade, you have to learn to swim. All children should be taught to swim. We have so many bodies of water in this world.

We know the history behind water and Black people. My mother tried. I was at the YMCA and Leimert Park in Inglewood. I had lessons and lessons. I have had lessons as an adult since I moved here in the south. It has not happened. It is on my list of things to do. The next thing for me is to do private lessons.

I was going to say, I know you can do it. You need the right teacher.

I feel like I’m a swimmer inside, but you can’t give me a noodle. You give me a noodle, I’m done. I’m hanging on to the noodle.

Biggest Work-Related Pet

I know that you can do it. I have no doubt. You need the right teacher. I would definitely do an individual class. Biggest work-related pet peeve. We talked about that.

No, I got a few more. My wish is that we all were empowered to do our job to the highest ability. Don’t make it hard for me to do my job. That bothers me. It also bothers me when people are not rowing in the same direction. We are in a service business, meaning we are committed to improving the lives of human beings. That is a high calling. That is an honor. It’s a privilege of my life. I’m grateful for it, but it is a collaborative effort. If everyone is not committed to the human being that we are in the OR, when you’re delivering babies or when I’m at the bedside, I need everyone that stands with me, beside me, to be laser-focused on the human being.

Boss Leap - Dr. Sylvia Morris & Dr. Angela Walker | Rapid-Fire

You could drop the mic with that one.

Pet peeve, you can see outside the tangent.

It’s patient-centered. That’s how we should be thinking. Mine is along those lines, particularly in an environment where the pet peeve is work-ins. In an office setting, you are working for someone to your schedule. There are certain problems. It has to be done. When it becomes a regular part of a provider’s schedule and expectation, then typically, the person who suffers the most is the patient, because they may not have as much time.

This may be getting a little bit into the weeds, but there are situations in which perhaps if there were more help to accommodate the number of patients that you have. I’m talking about situations where it’s not a one-person practice when we have several people, when you bring more people in, and potentially use more of the resources to pay that person. You can adequately serve your patients and give them the time, the physician or provider’s time, effort, and energy that the patient deserves.

The other part of that, though, is that there’s a responsibility for patients to show up on time. We’re about telling the truth here on Boss Leap. It’s like when we go to the hairstylist. You’ve got to be on time. If you’re not on time, then you cannot have the expectation that you’re going to receive the same service or that you can even be seen, because it backs everyone else up.

If you are not on time, you cannot expect to receive the same treatment as everyone else. Share on X

Pineapple On Pizza: Yay Or Nay?

Part of that, the notion of “I’m late, but the doctor is late sometimes, too,” is thinking that the doctor’s out having a coffee break. No, it was most often taking more time with the patient before because of additional problems that they may have had that didn’t fit into that fifteen or twenty-minute slot. Girl, we are getting way into the weeds. Let’s lighten it up a little bit. We were on the fun bus. Let’s get back on the fun bus. We’ll do a quick lightning round to finish this off. Quick, no second-guessing answer. Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?

Nope.

I’m a no, a hard no.

Cats Or Dogs

I know the answer to this, but cats or dogs?

Both now. I have a grand cat, so I have to say both. You?

I like other people’s animals. If you have a dog or a cat, then I’m whatever you got.

You’re good with other people’s animals, too. So sweet to Sebby, too.

Beach Escape Or Mountain Retreat

Beach escape or mountain retreat?

You know the answer to that. Beach escape, 100%. You?

I like them both. I know. The mountain retreat is great. When you can go and do, I pray, and I go snowshoeing, and the fashion. I love it.

I don’t even know any of that stuff. Beach escape.

Personal Theme Song

Do you have a personal theme song?

Yes. It’s The Journey by H.E.R.

I have to listen to that.

It’s so beautiful. It talks about the journey of life, but the way she put her words together makes me cry almost every time. It also helps that my child introduced me to the song, so I remember that. How about you?

What popped into my head is DJ Khaled. “All I do is win, win, win, no matter what.” It’s probably more aspirational. It’s a pump-up song.

Mantra and affirmation, all of that.

We’re going to have to put a pin in that. We’re going to have to come back to that one. I don’t know.

I like that one. That’s fun.

One Word To Describe Drs. Morris & Walker

Is there one word your friends would use to describe you?

I hope that it’s ‘kind.’ That’s what I strive for. How about you? Silky?

It’s either present, shows up, or grateful. Somewhere around in there.

I would say all of those. Thoughtful.
